Every home should be prepared for an emergency. A natural disaster or medical situation could happen at any time. The time to prepare is before, not when it happens. Actually, the Federal government recommends that every household should have an emergency supplies kit on hand. Below is a list of essentials and recommended supplies to have in your emergency kit.
You should have at least 2 gallons of water per person a day for one week. Don’t forget water for the pets!
Have non-perishables, like canned soups, meats and fruits. You will need a hand can opener as well. It is good to plan for at least 3 cans a day per person for about a week. Don’t forget to include non-perishable food for your pet as well.
There are many first kits available for purchase. Always check your first aid kit to make sure the expiration date is valid. It is also a good idea to have extra prescriptions and medicines, like Advil and Tylenol on hand.
You should always have flashlights, extra batteries, candles and water proof matches.
It’s a good idea to purchase a small supply of travel size shampoos, deodorants, tooth brushes and tooth paste. Also, feminine hygiene products, disposable razors, latex gloves, garbage bags and toilet paper are essential items. It would also be a good idea to have a supply of disinfectant.
A portable radio or television with extra batteries would provide you with a way to stay informed on the state of the emergency. A hand cranked or solar operated television or radio would be best. Also, keep a list of important phone numbers that you would need in an emergency. It’s always good to have a waterproof zip lock baggie with a pen, pencil and pad of paper.
Although expensive, a portable generator and the fuel to run it would be extremely beneficial in a disaster. A power converter that runs off a car battery could provide a source of electricity if a generator is not an option. Miscellaneous item such as a piece of nylon rope (100 ft.), leather gloves, and a multi-function pocket tool would also be useful for many things.
It is always a good idea to have at least $100.00 cash accessible if needed.
You may never need to use your kit, but in case of a disaster, you will be happy that you were prepared and it will increase your chances of survivability.
